A Challenge for Everyone
One of the most important aspects of the Saint-Charles Défi is that it involves all students. The objective is not simply to discover who can complete the route fastest. Instead, every student is encouraged to challenge themselves, contribute to the collective experience and support others along the way. For some, that meant running and testing their endurance. For others, the challenge was about maintaining a steady pace, walking with friends and reaching Saint-Ursanne together. Whatever their approach, completing the journey required perseverance. These experiences are an important part of education at Saint-Charles. Young people need opportunities to discover that they can achieve things that initially appear difficult. Physical challenges develop resilience, but they also teach students about encouragement, teamwork and the satisfaction that comes from completing a shared goal.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
As a Swiss international school, Saint-Charles believes that education should extend well beyond lessons and examinations. The Défi is a perfect example. Students spend the day outdoors, exercise, talk to people outside their usual friendship groups and experience their local environment in a completely different way. The route between Glovelier and Saint-Ursanne also provides a spectacular setting. For our international students, events such as the Défi are particularly valuable. Attending an international school in Switzerland should mean experiencing Switzerland itself – its landscapes, communities, traditions and culture. Finishing in Saint-Ursanne, one of the Jura's most beautiful historic towns, makes the experience particularly memorable.
Building the Saint-Charles Community
Perhaps the greatest value of the Défi is the sense of community it creates. Students of different ages and backgrounds share the same route and the same objective. Teachers and staff participate alongside them, encouragement is exchanged and success becomes something collective rather than purely individual. The experience reflects our school values of Kindness, Respect and Responsibility. Supporting someone who is finding the route difficult, showing determination when tired and taking responsibility for completing the challenge are simple but powerful examples of those values in action.
Proudly International, Proudly Jura
Saint-Charles is an international school, but it is also deeply connected to Porrentruy and the Canton of Jura. The Défi brings these two aspects of our identity together beautifully. Our international community has the opportunity to step outside the school campus and experience the extraordinary landscape of the region we call home. By the time everyone reached Saint-Ursanne, there were undoubtedly some tired legs. But there was also the satisfaction of having completed something together.
That is what the Saint-Charles Défi is ultimately about: challenge, resilience, friendship and a school community moving forward together.
