Small School, Big Opportunities
The Advantages of Personalised Education
Why individual attention, strong relationships and a genuine sense of belonging make all the difference at Saint-Charles International School.
At Saint-Charles International School in Porrentruy, Switzerland, we believe that outstanding education begins with strong relationships. Our relatively small size allows us to combine academic ambition with personalised attention, creating an environment where students feel known, valued and supported.
This commitment was strongly reinforced by the results of our recent school community surveys, which highlighted the quality of relationships and the caring atmosphere as particular strengths of Saint-Charles.
Every student is known, not just taught
One of the greatest advantages of a smaller school is that students are more than names on a register. Teachers come to understand each student's strengths, interests, aspirations and challenges. This knowledge allows them to adapt their teaching, provide meaningful feedback and recognise when additional support or encouragement is needed. At Saint-Charles, personalised education does not mean lowering expectations. Quite the opposite. When teachers understand their students, they are better positioned to challenge them appropriately and help them achieve their potential. Whether a student is working towards the Swiss Maturité, International Baccalaureate Diploma or High School Diploma, individual guidance remains central to their educational journey.
What our school community tells us
Our recent stakeholder surveys provided particularly encouraging feedback about the human dimension of Saint-Charles. The quality of student-teacher relationships, individual attention and the school's welcoming, supportive culture emerged as notable strengths. This feedback is especially meaningful because it reflects the everyday experiences of the people who know our school best: students, parents and staff. For families, knowing that their child is recognised and supported as an individual provides reassurance. For students, positive relationships with teachers create the confidence to ask questions, seek help, take intellectual risks and persevere when learning becomes challenging. These relationships are not simply a pleasant addition to academic education. They are fundamental to effective learning.
Small enough to care, ambitious enough to inspire
A smaller school does not mean smaller ambitions. Saint-Charles offers an impressive range of opportunities, including Swiss and international academic qualifications, bilingual French-English education, sporting academies, international travel, Model United Nations and student leadership activities. Our recent IB Diploma results, including a 100% pass rate across recent graduating cohorts and an average score of 33.8 points, demonstrate how a personalised environment can accompany strong academic achievement. Students are encouraged to explore their interests, develop new talents and participate actively in school life. Importantly, opportunities are not reserved for a small group of particularly confident or high-achieving students. A close-knit community can encourage more young people to contribute, participate and discover abilities they may not previously have recognised.
A genuine sense of belonging
For international students, particularly those living away from home, belonging is essential. Our boarding community and school environment provide opportunities to build meaningful friendships across cultures and nationalities. The school's values of Kindness, Respect and Responsibility help create a culture in which positive relationships are deliberately nurtured. Students learn that they are part of a community where their contributions matter and where success is measured not only through examination results, but also through personal growth, character and responsibility.
The Saint-Charles difference
At Saint-Charles, we believe the greatest educational opportunities arise when high expectations are combined with genuine personal care. Our recent survey feedback reinforces what we strive to achieve every day: a school where strong relationships provide the foundation for confidence, achievement and wellbeing. Small enough for every student to be known. Ambitious enough for every student to flourish.
